NAATI CCL Dialogue Legal 04 – Break-in Police Report

Scenario: A woman is reporting a late-night home break-in to the police. Her partner was injured during the incident, and though nothing valuable was taken, she’s deeply shaken.

Police: Hi, I noticed a home break-in report just came in five minutes ago.

Woman: Yes, it happened just after midnight. I heard loud crashing downstairs, and when I got up to check, I saw a group of teenagers forcing their way in through the back door.

Police: Were they armed or did they say anything threatening when they broke in? I need as many details as you can remember.

Woman: I don’t think they had weapons, but one of them pushed my partner when he tried to stop them. He hit his head on the stairs and started bleeding.

Police: That sounds serious. Did you call an ambulance right away? And has your partner received medical attention since then?

Woman: Yes, I called as soon as I could. The paramedics arrived within ten minutes and took him to the hospital. He’s conscious now but still shaken.

Police: Do you recall how many teenagers there were, or what they looked like—clothing, hair, accents—anything that might help us identify them?

Woman: There were at least four of them. They looked young—maybe fifteen or sixteen? Hoodies, dark clothes. One had a noticeable limp. I didn’t see their faces clearly.

Police: Did they take anything from the house? Electronics, cash, car keys, personal items?

Woman: Surprisingly, no. They just ran after the struggle with my partner. Nothing seems to be missing, but I haven’t checked every drawer yet.

Police: We’ll help you go over everything later. Right now, we’re making a full report and will send someone from forensics to look at the back door.

Woman: Thank you. I’ve never experienced anything like this. I still feel like I’m in shock. I couldn’t sleep at all last night.

Police: That’s completely understandable. You’ve been through a traumatic event. We’ll also refer you to support services that can help you emotionally process this.

Woman: I appreciate that. It’s hard to feel safe in my own home now. I just want to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Police: We’ll do everything we can to track them down. In the meantime, we’ll increase patrols in your area and offer some tips on home security.
