Apostille vs Authentication

1. Apostille (for Hague Convention Member Countries)

If the destination country is a Hague Convention member, DFAT will issue an Apostille.
This verifies the authenticity of the signature, stamp or seal on your document and allows it to be used overseas without any further consular authentication.

2. Authentication (for Non-Hague Countries)

For countries that are not members of the Hague Convention, DFAT issues an Authentication certificate.
In most cases, you will then need to present the authenticated document to the relevant foreign embassy or consulate.
